Reflection on meeting 1

Personally I feel that the meeting was a successful one although there was still space for improvement.

At first, everybody in my group felt a bit nervous because everything that was discussed would be recorded. In fact, during the first few minutes of the meeting we all felt very awkward. However, after the very first few minutes of maladjustment,we managed to discuss in a more natural and efficient manner.

Throughout the meeting,we have achieved our initial objective of planning all the possible functions that we were going to use for the cg1102 lab 3.We also managed to discuss a little bit about how the whole program should be looked like after implementing every single code for it.Since time is limited,we focused more on the functions that we were about to use in the program. This was quite difficult because the questions given did not have any specific instructions.

Firstly we have reached a consensus that we should use a "product" class to store the different attributes that the question required.Other than that,we have also decided that we should use a linked-list to store the information of different products.Once the linked-list is established, the user will be able to traverse through the list to find the specific products that he or she wants.Lastly,we discussed about the "UI" class which is simply what the users see on the screen.By accessing the methods in the "UI" class, the user will be able to modify the data in the system and the user does not need to know the actual implementation.

As one of the member of the team,I feel that my contribution to the meeting was not satisfiable.I need to talk more and participate more actively in group discussions.Although I tried to give my own opinions during the meeting, most of the time I just repeated or re-confirmed what has been discussed.I will certainly improve these team communication skills and anticipate a better performance of myself in the next meeting.

On the whole,I really felt that this meeting is significant and useful. It practiced our problem-solving skills as well as teamwork and communication skills.

  1. Hi Li Kai,

I am sure everyone felt awkward with the camera rolling due to the fact that most of us had never experienced something like this. It was though we became actors and actresses in a short one hour film. However, I agree with you that it got more natural when everyone started to get engaged in the meeting.

Regarding the CG1102 Lab, I feel that it is almost impossible to discuss thoroughly the details such as the classes and functions needed for the lab in an hour as the lab’s specifications were too sketchy. Most of us could only come up with the general details on how to approach the problem.

I find it essential for all the members to participate actively in a meeting. It is because if one member would to not give any contributions, it would be as if the team had one lesser member. One useful suggestion is to be more prepared for the meeting. Preparations, such as reading up of notes, will contribute to the flow of the meeting. This would ensure that all the members are on the right page and hence things could be done at a much faster pace.

  2. Hi Li Kai,

I think that it is normal to feel weird to be filmed during a meeting, and it is good to know that you managed to keep the idea of being filmed out of you head gradually and thus allowing your team to concentrate on the tasks at hand.

From your description, Cherlia definitely showcase her potential as a good team leader. Being able to control the flow of the meeting, involving everyone in the discussion, etc, is not easy. Sometimes, one may be too occupied with an idea mentioned by somebody, and thus ignoring other team members. Being receptive to a series of ideas is what is required of a leader and I think that Cherlia will definitely be up to the task.

Most of the time, people perceive meetings as something that is time consuming and boring. However, from your description, It seems that your meeting was not boring at all. With Jay being active in discussions and Cherlia leading the meeting, it kust have been an enjoyable meeting.

It is great that the whole team contributed to the ideas and hence allowing the meeting to go by smoothly. In addition, you put into practise the things we learnt during our tutorial classes. This shows that you are making an effort to improve yourself and it is a good effort made.

It is good that you are able to know your weaknesses. As we have all learnt before, self-honesty is required in effective communication. Therefore, I think that subsequently, you can try to speak up more to improve on your weaknesses.

I hope my comments have been of help to you.

    Regards,
    Ryan

  3. Hi Likai,

Good to know that your first meeting was successful and fruitful.Since it is the first time many of us are having a video recorded meeting,it is common that we feel awkward in the beginning but after sometime we get used to the camera and get involved in the meeting.

I agree with you on the point that the time available was very limited and we had to complete the discussion within the stipulated time. But it also helped in a way that we never deviated from the topic and were focused.Team leaders play a very important role in the team's progress and it is good that your team leader was very enthusiastic and ensured that each of you participated in the discussions.

Not all of us are from a programming background and hence it is important that we are well prepared for the meeting so that all of us are in the same pace. This will also ensure that all of us contribute equally to the team's development.

  4. Hi Likai,

I am sure everyone felt the same way about being camera shy and having some form of stage fright in the beginning of the meeting. The nervousness of being filmed and the added pressure of being graded according to every word and action that is being filmed would definitely have an adverse effect on the quality and flow of the discussion.

It is impressive to see that the different forms of effective communication that we have learnt for the past few weeks are being put into good use. The fact that having an agenda and sticking to it successfully without straying away from topic shows that the group is focused and task orientated. It certainly seems that Cherlia did a wonderful job as a leader and I also feel that this particular lab has given us a lot of room to experiment with, hence the functions discussed would be quite abstract at this point of time.

I personally feel that you should be more confident about speaking out as every bit of contribution is valuable in such a difficult lab. I believe many of us have the same issue of being not proficient in our programming skills. However, that is where teamwork comes into play and clarifying doubts as a team would definitely yield better results as compared to being stuck in a particular line of code with no one but lecture notes that offer minimal assistance.

On the whole, I feel that it was a successful good meeting with minimal disturbances and with a responsible leader like Cherlia, future meetings would yield even more fruitful results. Happy Chinese New Year to you!

    Regards,
    Jay

  5. Hi Likai,

Glad to know that your first meeting went well. Nervousness in the first meeting is very natural. Most of the time we dont know our group mates. This can bring a little awkwardness among every body. But getting over this awkwardness is what we call teamwork which I felt your group had it. Your group had a very good understanding for each other in first meeting it self.

Your group leader was very impressive. She did a very good job in directing the meeting towards the goal. Her approach towards the process was very professional and systematic. A group needs to have a planned action for every meeting and your group had it this is why it made the meeting smooth .

I would like to wish you good luck for future meetings.

    Regards
    Ayushi
